# What happens at the county clerk’s office?

Mostly nothing you do yourself. After the Secretary of State approves you, the commission, your oath, and your official signature are transmitted to the County Clerk of your county of residence (or your office’s county, for non-residents) by the 10th day of the following month. The clerk records and indexes them — that public record is how the world verifies your notarizations. There’s no separate home-county fee: $20 of your $60 application covered the oath filing. Optional extras — certificates of official character for other counties, $3 authentications — are covered in [NY notary county registration, explained](https://nynotaryexamprep.com/ny-notary-county-registration-explained/).
