# Where and when are the exams given?

At Department of State exam centers across the state, on a published schedule — currently 14 sites, from Albany, Binghamton, and Buffalo to Hauppauge, Utica, and White Plains, most running sessions two to four times a month on weekday mornings. Except in New York City, the exam is walk-in: no pre-registration, seats first-come, first-served. New York City’s site (123 William Street) requires advance email scheduling — email exams@dos.ny.gov with the subject “Schedule Notary Public Exam” and wait for your confirmation; you can’t just show up. Dates and sites change, so check the [DOS schedule](https://dos.ny.gov/become-notary-public) before you travel.
