Free NY Notary Practice Test: 20 Questions, Instant Scoring, Topic-by-Topic Results

Find out exactly where you stand before you sit for the New York notary exam. This free practice test gives you 20 questions drawn from the same verified question bank behind our full prep course, scored instantly, broken down by topic, with an explanation for every answer that cites the page of the state’s own study booklet.

No signup to start. No credit card. No teaser: the score, the topic breakdown, and every explanation are the whole point.

What this practice test is

Twenty multiple-choice questions covering the four areas that decide most exam outcomes:

  • Definitions and legal terms: affidavit, jurat, conveyance, chattel, executor vs. administrator, testator, codicil
  • Acknowledgments vs. jurats (and oaths vs. affirmations): the single most-confused distinction on the exam
  • Fees and dollar amounts: the $2 notarial fee, the protest calculation, the $60 application, the $15 exam fee
  • Compliance, powers, and prohibitions: what a New York notary may do, must refuse, and can never do

The questions are written the way the real exam writes them: serious, subtly wrong distractors, negative phrasing (“NOT,” “EXCEPT,” “CANNOT”), and scenario questions where the correct answer is often to decline. No “all of the above,” no joke answers, because the real exam doesn’t use them.

Every question in the bank is keyed to the Notary Public License Law booklet published by the New York Department of State (the March 2026 edition, 22 pages), and every explanation tells you which booklet page the answer comes from. If a question is about the protest fee, you’ll see that it lives on pages 7-8 of the booklet, not just that “$1.25” is correct. (We also wrote a companion that explains the whole booklet page by page.)

How it works

1. Start immediately. No account needed to take the test. Click start, answer 20 questions.

2. Get scored instantly. Your total score appears the moment you finish.

3. See your topic breakdown. You’ll see a percentage for each of the four topic areas, so a weakness in fees looks different from a weakness in definitions.

4. Read every explanation, right or wrong. Each one cites the booklet page it comes from.

5. Get the full saved report. Enter your email at the end and we’ll send your complete results with the topic breakdown and every explanation, so you can turn your weakest area into a study plan. The email is for delivering the report. Nothing else.

What the real New York notary exam is like

The state exam is a walk-in, closed-book, multiple-choice test administered by the Department of State at exam centers across New York. Per our course materials and DOS’s published schedule, this is what you’ll face:

  • 40 multiple-choice questions, one hour, closed book. You may miss 12 and still pass. The passing score is 70% (28 of 40).
  • Pass/fail only. No numerical score is ever reported, on a pass or a fail.
  • No pre-registration at most sites. The current DOS schedule states plainly: “No pre-registration is required. Seats are limited and assigned on a first-come/first-served basis.” New York City is the exception: the City’s exam site currently uses an email-scheduling process because seating is very limited.
  • Every question comes from the state’s booklet. DOS’s own exam information says the topics are “as outlined in the ‘Notary Public License Law’ booklet.” That booklet is free from the Department of State.
  • The weighting is lopsided. Roughly 60% of questions come from the License Law itself (fees, powers, penalties), about 25% from the definitions glossary, and about 15% from duties and functions.

The exam is also offered in Spanish, Haitian-Creole, Italian, Korean, Russian, and Chinese. Tell the proctor when you check in.

When you’re ready for the full simulation

This free test tells you whether you’re ready. It is a diagnostic, not a course, and 20 questions can’t cover a 22-page booklet. If your topic breakdown is clean everywhere, you may need nothing but the booklet itself. If it isn’t, that’s what the full course is for.

The NY Notary Exam Prep course includes 28 video lessons that walk through the booklet page by page, interactive drills for every fee and definition, a bank of 222 verified questions, and a full timed 40-question simulation with the same format, pacing, and topic reporting as the real exam, so there are no surprises on exam day. It’s $69, it comes with our pass guarantee, and your access lasts the lifetime of this edition: the course is aligned to the March 2026 Notary Public License Law booklet and stays yours until the state’s exam materials change materially.

Either way: start with the free test. It’s the honest answer to “am I ready?”

Free NY notary practice test: FAQ

How many questions is the real New York notary exam?

Forty multiple-choice questions in one hour, closed book. Our free practice test uses 20 questions, half the length, with the same style and coverage pattern, so your topic breakdown maps directly onto the real exam’s weighting.

What is a passing score on the NY notary exam?

70%, which is 28 correct out of 40. Results are reported as pass or fail only. DOS states you will not get a numerical score either way. You’re notified by mail.

Is this free practice test enough to pass the exam on its own?

Honestly: it tells you *if* you’re ready; it isn’t how you *get* ready. Twenty questions can diagnose a weakness in fees or definitions, but the real exam requires exact numbers and exact wording across all 22 pages of the booklet. Use your topic breakdown to decide: strong everywhere means keep drilling the booklet, and weak anywhere means you need structured prep. That’s exactly the decision this test exists to inform.

Is the test really free? Do I need to sign up?

It’s free, and you start without an account. Email is requested only at the end, to send your full saved report with the topic breakdown and explanations.

Does it match the current exam?

Yes. Every question is keyed to the March 2026 edition of the DOS “Notary Public License Law” booklet, the edition the exam currently draws from, and each explanation cites its booklet page. If DOS publishes a new edition, the bank gets re-keyed.

Where do I actually sit for the exam?

At Department of State exam centers across the state. The current schedule lists 14 sites, from Albany and Buffalo to Hauppauge and White Plains, most running sessions two to four times a month. It’s walk-in (first-come, first-served) everywhere except New York City, which currently requires advance email scheduling. We cover all of it in NY notary exam-day logistics.
