The 7 Best NY Notary Exam Prep Courses, Honestly Ranked (2026)
Most “best NY notary prep” lists are written by one of the courses being ranked, ranking itself first. This list is also written by a course maker. We publish NyNotaryExamPrep, one of the options below, ranked under the same rules as everyone else and disclosed where we appear. Being visibly fair is the only ranking worth trusting from a provider. The criteria are stated before the ranking, every fact comes from each provider’s own published pages (verified September 2026), and no entry gets quality claims we cannot source.
One thing you will not find here: pass-rate numbers. The Department of State publishes none, and the numbers circulating in this market are marketing claims with no published source. We traced the famous “60% fail rate” here. If any provider leads with a pass rate, ask them for the source.
The criteria, stated before the ranking
1. Price and value: what the dollars include, not just the number
2. Question bank: size, and whether it’s built for New York’s current exam
3. Format currency: designed for today’s on-demand learner versus a recorded lecture
4. Guarantee: does the provider stand behind the outcome
5. Transparency: are prices, policies, and product details published
6. Track record: tenure, organizational backing, and independent reviews
1. NYS Notary Public Association: best overall for most people ($77)
The incumbent, and it earns the top spot on the criteria. Operating since 2001, the association publishes the largest question bank in the field (253 questions in 5 parts plus a random 40-question generator), includes a free-repeat guarantee, and offers a free full-length 40-question sample exam with no signup, the most generous free item any paid provider in this market offers. Its 2014 flagship YouTube seminar, with roughly 198,000 views, lets you preview the actual teaching before paying.
Why it is not a clean sweep: the core product is a recorded 5-hour hotel seminar, not a course built in lessons; its own pages contradict each other on the access period (4 months versus 30 days on the Thinkific page) and on the “students trained” total (60,000 to 70,000+ depending on the site); and its YouTube states live seminars are suspended while the homepage still lists them. Full detail in our association review.
On the criteria, the bank, the guarantee, the tenure, and a transparent $77 outweigh the dated format. Best for: most buyers, especially anyone who wants the established default and a full free sample first.
2. NNA New York: best budget pick from a national brand ($35 promo, reg. $69)
The National Notary Association is the most recognized name in American notary work, and its New York course is the price anchor of the entire market: $35 on promo buys a self-paced online course, a 120-question bank delivered as unlimited randomized 40-question exams, and flash cards. The practice engine mirrors the real exam’s 40-question format, and there is a decades-old national organization behind the product.
Why it stops at #2: no guarantee (returns only), a bank roughly half the size of the dedicated providers’, and a national catalog rather than a New York-only build. It also sits inside a funnel toward supplies and insurance, fair, but worth knowing. Full detail in our NNA review.
Best for: budget buyers who want a credible name and a supplement-sized bank, and don’t need a guarantee.
3. NyNotaryExamPrep (ours): best modern course, the modern option ($69)
The disclosure again: this is our course, and we rank it third on purpose. What $69 buys: 28 on-demand video lessons walking the state booklet page by page, a bank of 222 questions with every explanation citing its booklet page (the March 2026 edition), interactive drills for every fee and definition, a free 20-question diagnostic with instant topic-level scoring, and a timed 40-question simulation with topic reporting, plus a pass guarantee. Access lasts the lifetime of this edition: yours until the state’s exam materials change materially.
Why #3 and not higher: track record is one of our own stated criteria, and we have the least of it. The association has 25 years; the NNA has a national reputation; our course is the newest product on this list, without years of student outcomes behind it. The free tier is also shorter than the incumbent’s. Our free diagnostic is 20 questions against their free 40. Being new costs two places here, and that is the honest math.
Best for: learners who want a current, New York-only course with diagnostics and booklet-referenced explanations, and are comfortable that it is new. Try the free diagnostic first. It is the cheapest way to judge us.
4. Notary Public Central: best live class, if the price fits (not published)
Operating since 1998 and WBE-certified, Notary Public Central runs 3-hour live classes in New York metro locations plus an online option with 90-day access, a 200-question prep test, a practice exam, forms, and unlimited support, backed by a pass-or-next-class-free guarantee that is among the strongest terms in the field.
Why it is not top three: it does not publish prices. Registration runs by phone or through Enrollware, so the price appears only inside the registration process. That fails our transparency criterion outright and makes value-for-money impossible to assess from outside. That is a business choice, not a quality judgment, and everything else about the program is competitive. Call, get the number, then decide. Full detail in our Notary Public Central review.
Best for: learners who want a live instructor, a long-standing operator, and a strong retake guarantee, and will make a phone call to learn the price.
5. SUNY Suffolk and the community colleges: best classroom credibility ($75 verified at Suffolk)
SUNY Suffolk’s continuing-education division runs a verified $75 notary prep class: one 3-hour evening session on a college schedule. Similar offerings exist at Nassau Community College, Molloy, Dutchess, Orange, and CUNY campuses. Their prices were not verifiable as of September 2026, so only Suffolk’s appears in our cost table.
The strength is institutional credibility and a real classroom; the limits are structural: one evening, no question bank, no guarantee, and schedules that require your availability to match the college calendar.
Best for: learners who want a familiar institution, a fixed date, and a live teacher, and already live near a campus offering it.
6. NYREI: best if you are already a NYREI real-estate student ($95, or $75 for NYREI students)
NYREI, a Manhattan real-estate school, teaches the notary class as a 3-hour classroom or livestream session with one end-of-course practice exam. The strengths: a live instructor, an established school, and a $75 rate if you are already a NYREI student. That is the real audience, since a notary commission is a practical add-on for real-estate careers.
Why it ranks low on the criteria: it carries the highest published price in the field while publishing the fewest practice questions and no guarantee. And one observed scheduling note, stated as an observation: when we checked in September 2026, one listed session appeared as cancelled. Confirm dates before booking. Full detail in our NYREI review.
Best for: current NYREI students and NYC learners who specifically want live instruction from a school they already use.
7. Notary Public 101: the price floor ($25)
The cheapest verified option: $25 for online access over 90 days. What the page publishes is minimal: no practice tests mentioned, a refund policy limited to the pre-completion period, and a single visible customer review (five stars). We do not doubt the five stars; we simply cannot evaluate more than what is published.
Why it ranks last: on the stated criteria it publishes less of everything: no bank, no guarantee, and no product detail to evaluate. If $25 is the budget and expectations match, the price is real and the terms are published. Full context in our cost comparison.
Best for: the tightest budgets, with the clearest understanding of what is and is not included.
Honorable mention: NY Notary Hub, the best free option
No paid list should hide the free lane. NY Notary Hub publishes, with no signup, a timed practice engine (10, 20, or 40 questions at three difficulty levels) drawing on 120+ questions with explanations, plus a study guide mapped to the state booklet, and it ranks near the top of organic search for “new york notary exam prep.” The site publishes no company identity, which is worth noticing, but as free drilling material it holds up. Pair it with the state’s free booklet (our section-by-section companion) and our free 20-question diagnostic, and you can be well into preparation before spending anything.
How to choose among them
- For the established default with the biggest bank and a guarantee: the association, #1, with the access period confirmed in writing.
- For the cheapest credible option: the NNA at $35, #2.
- For live instruction: Notary Public Central (call first) or a college class, #4-5.
- For current, New York-only, diagnostic-driven prep: ours, #3, discounted honestly for being new.
- To spend nothing: the state’s free booklet, the Hub’s free bank, and our free diagnostic.
Every one of these paths starts the same way: find out where you actually stand. Take the free NY notary practice test: 20 questions from our verified bank, scored instantly by topic, every explanation citing the booklet page. Your weakest topic is your study plan, whichever course you end up in.
